The Way of Play: Strengthening the Profound Role of Play for Developing Minds.

In the upcoming book, The Way of Play (co-written with Dr. Tina Payne Bryson, NY Times bestselling author of The Whole-Brain Child), renowned play therapist Georgie Wisen-Vincent, LMFT RPT-S, presents the latest scientific research with a special emphasis on early childhood, the power of play, and the developing brain.

In a way that’s clear, interesting, and immediately practical for early care and multidisciplinary 0-5 practitioners, therapists, educators, and parents, Georgie will present an innovative, research-supported approach to play she and her team have developed at The PlayStrong Institute. The focus is on better understanding the role of play and what it does for the mind, brain, and relationships, with ample attention on rethinking challenging behaviors in early childhood and how connection and play can address adversity, change behaviors, and boost development.

In this highly engaging 3-hour training, presented by PlayStrong developer Georgie Wisen-Vincent LMFT RPT-S, you’ll learn what we currently know about the science of play and how play builds the child’s healthy developing brain from “back to front, bottom-up.” We’ll also take a look at how family trauma can interrupt patterns of strong emotional development and the early bonds of attachment. You’ll see tons of examples – through funny and heart-warming stories, fascinating video clips, and interactive live demos – of how the PlayStrong approach invites infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school-age children to explore and interact in play alongside their therapists, parents, and teachers, to improve behavior, create healthy and secure bonds, and boost stress recovery and resilience.

Screen Based Childhood: The Disappearance of Play and the Impact on Child Development

The current generation of young children has been born into a technological culture in which child directed play has been replaced by interaction with a screen. A screen-based childhood has a significant impact on the emotional, social, physical, and cognitive growth of children. This 2-hour session will address the various effects on different aspects of growth and the importance of a return to child-directed play. Participants will identify key cultural developments that have led to the disappearance of play, describe the impact of a screen-based culture on young children's healthy growth and development, define “child-directed” play,and identify the twelve different kinds of child-directed play that every child needs to flourish.
